6/12 Atlanta, GA – Multi-Vehicle Collision on I-20 Near Moreland Ave

Atlanta, GA (April 1, 2021) – A 4-year-old boy has died a day after police said a stolen SUV slammed into his father’s car on Wednesday evening, March 31.

The Fulton County medical examiner’s office confirmed that the boy died on Thursday. His father remains in critical condition.

Officers with the Atlanta Police Department said that the crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday on Lakewood Avenue in southeast Atlanta. At that time, a Honda SUV crashed into the victim’s Lexus head-on.

Police said the SUV was reported stolen out of DeKalb County. Officers got an alert from a tag reader about the SUV being spotted a couple of miles south of downtown, but the SUV sped off and ended with the deadly crash on Lakewood Avenue.

Police said there were six young men inside the stolen SUV. Four of them fled the scene, and the other two were treated and detained.

The crash is still under investigation, but officers say charges are pending. Atlanta authorities have not confirmed if officers were actively chasing the stolen SUV.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of a full recovery.
